Bruce discusses Financial Education on TV
CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Now with Mike Collins, the only locally-produced primetime public affairs program on commercial television in the Charlotte market, recently invited Bruce Nofsinger, co-founder of Topics Education, to discuss the state of the current economy and the need for more emphasis on personal financial education. The episode will air on WJZY CW46 on Sunday, November 2, 2008, at 10:35 pm.
Recently back from facilitating the New England Youth Financial Education Forum, Nofsinger elaborates on the show about what he means by personal financial education. “I’m not saying that we should all be able to understand financial concepts like derivatives,” Nofsinger states. “Instead, I believe everyone should have a foundational financial understanding and the requisite skills that help us to maintain our financial health. Like preventative healthcare, financial education must start at a young age, building on that foundation as our financial needs and challenges change. Establishing reflective and proactive habits early prevents a lot of bad decisions later in life.”
This is the second time Nofsigner has appeared on the show. In his appearance on July 22, 2007, he discussed a financial literacy survey of North Carolina 7th graders developed and administered by Topics Education on behalf of the North Carolina Department of State Treasurer. The survey results showed a lack of financial knowledge among students, strongly pointing to the need to incorporate financial literacy into the state standard of curriculum was necessary.
